Senior Class Trip a Success

Posted: 05-27-08 at 12:58:17

On May 26, the LCS Class of 2008 returned from Pass Christian, Mississippi after a week of assisting in the on-going Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Students worked with the relief organization, Hands of Hope, in building homes for the many victims of Hurricane Katrina still living in FEMA trailers. The team painted, laid sub-flooring, hung kitchen cabinets, installed kitchen plumbing, and built stairs. They spent Saturday sunning and swimming at Ship Island, a Carribean-like island in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hands of Hope director, Greg Nitchman, asked the seniors to encourage next year's graduating class to return. Mr. Nitchman indicated that there are building funds available, but that Hands of Hope and other reconstruction ministries are in need of volunteers.

LCS Students "Walk for Books"

Posted: 05-14-08 at 12:46:39

On Friday afternoon, May 9th, students in grades 5 through 12 walked around the Smith Track in Opechee Park to raise money for textbooks for students in Sudan. Students were shown video footage of a school in Sudan, started by the non-profit organization Servant's Heart, and wanted to make a difference. They raised pledges to walk eight laps around the track - totalling two miles - while carrying at least three hard-covered textbooks. "I wanted them to have a physical reminder of their privelege and Sudan's need," said Kristin Pelletier, the school's community service coordinator. Some students wanted an additional challenge and "picked up the pace," running the eight laps.

The event brought in over $1,400 which was donated to Servant's Heart (servantsheartrelief.org) to complete the purchase and shipment of textbooks to South Sudan. "The students were amazed at the conditions there...that some classes had no other materials than one old chalkboard," said Pelletier. Servant's Heart, an organization started by Dennis and Diane Bennett of Washington state, has been serving the educational, medical, spiritual and economic needs in the Eastern Upper Nile and south Blue Nile regions of Sudan for over a decade.

Whether the two miles were completed at an easy stroll or a flat-out run, each student kept in mind that every step made a difference in the life of another student half-way around the world.
