NILD Educational Therapy

“This program has changed my son's life. It has helped him gain confidence in himself and it has shown him that he is a very intelligent and capable person. It has been a blessing to our entire family. We now understand his difficulties, and rather than be frustrated by them we can help him”

Deborah LaPlante

“When I first came to Discovery at age 12, I was barely able to write the word “cat”. Now at age 18, I am able to write descriptive stories. I would encourage parents – the earlier the better.”

Micah Jackson

NILD Educational Therapy® (also known as The Discovery Program) was developed to treat assumed, underlying causes of learning difficulties rather than simply treating the symptoms. A learning disability is an area of weakness or inefficiency in brain function that significantly hinders a student’s ability to learn or to function in life. Educational therapists are trained to develop language and thinking through effective questioning. Students are taught to defend their answers and to reflect upon their thinking processes. They transition from dependent learners to those who think and reason independently.

Our Philosophy:
Direct and focused attack on deficient thinking skills can stimulate the brain to work more efficiently.

Our Mission:
To build the competence and confidence of those who struggle to learn. To help students develop the tools of independent learning for the classroom and for life.

Focused stimulation on deficient thinking skills
Strengthening weak skills rather than teaching students to simply compensate for weaknesses

Through interactive language, children are led to evaluate their own thinking and to develop new skills and strategies

Regular collaboration between the educational therapist, parents and classroom teachers is encouraged in order to assess progress and appropriately adjust educational programs for each student.

Integrative
Developing perceptual and cognitive skills in reading, writing, spelling and math

Individual and Intense
Participating in one-on-one therapy in 90-minute sessions twice a week

Non-tutoral approach
Guiding students in “how to learn” rather than tutoring them in “what to learn”

What happens during therapy sessions?
Therapy sessions include a variety of techniques designed to address a student’s specific areas of difficulty and to improve his/her overall ability to think, reason and process information. Students are trained to think for themselves rather than depend upon a teacher or parent to think for them. Language and thinking skills are interdependent so that when one skill develops the other is also strengthened.
